OUR STORY
Letters From Rocky was created by Loren and Alli - professional wildlife photographers - who have spent decades traveling the Western United States capturing photos and videos of a wide variety of animals endemic to the Rocky Mountain region. In the past six years we’ve been living in Estes Park, Colorado on the doorstep to Rocky Mountain National Park. In 2022, we started Good Bull Guided Tours, a wildlife and photography tour guide company that we own and operate. Our social media pages have more than 5,000,000 followers and get as many as 2,000,000,000 views each year! This experience has shown us first hand how everyone, especially children, love wildlife. Not only do they love wildlife but they love learning about wildlife too! We started Letters From Rocky to bring our experiences with wildlife photography and story telling to kids that love the outdoors but may not have the opportunity to see and experience these animals in person. Recipients of Letters From Rocky will get a monthly dose of amazing photos and incredible information along with subscriber only bonus content to deepen their understanding of these iconic species.
Animals are endlessly fascinating and our there’s always more to learn about them. Letters from Rocky was created to educate you, your children, and your grand children about these amazing animals from the perspective of someone who’s classroom is the wilderness of our national parks and other public lands. We hope that the pictures speak a thousand words while drawing in curious minds. We hope they teach the reader about the amazing animals that call these places home. We believe the post cards are opportunities to share the experience and the field notes will deepen their understanding of the animals they see coming to life on the page. As a bonus, each letter will include a QR code to take you to a page only those receiving the letter can access. This subscriber only information will include an audio recording of each letter, spoken aloud by Loren, so if you’re not sure how to pronounce something you’ll be able to listen to the recording. When applicable, Loren also provides audio recordings of sounds that bring these animals and the field notes to life. We’ll also include additional photos of the monthly topic animal and other bonus content as well on each month’s letter specific web page!
Perhaps most importantly, NONE of the writing or the original photographs will ever be generated from Artificial Intelligence (AI). We do use a number of applications to edit real photographic images (as all professional photographers do) but the words and the original images were created entirely by ourselves with a camera and not through any generative AI application or process. We also only use our own copyrighted photographs - never stock photography. If you’re seeing an image in our letters its there because we took that image in person. All drawings and coloring pages used in the letters, field notes, postcards, and monthly web pages were created from our photographs using a variety of editing software and may include prebuilt objects, like animal tracks, to enhance the visual appeal.
From the Author
My first experience with wildlife photography was borrowing my father’s film camera, an old Canon AE-1, and bringing it into the mountains on a solo hike looking for wildlife. I had a fresh roll of film and set out on a 5 mile hike in the Little Snowy mountains of central Montana. My very first photograph of wildlife was a newborn elk calf and its mom. For you kids reading, this was well before cell phones, the internet, and even digital cameras existed! While walking through a meadow I surprised a cow elk that had just given birth. She trotted away a short distance and as I looked down I saw the calf laying quietly beneath the brush. I took a few pictures and backed out the way I came so the mom could rejoin its calf and allow it to begin nursing. Needless to say I have been hooked on wildlife photography ever since!
Its been more than 30 years since that day and its still a fond memory. After numerous trips to the wilderness with a camera in my hand I took several college courses on photography. While these courses didn’t focus on wildlife they did provide me an understanding of the nuances and the art of photography as well as providing me the opportunity to develop film and photographs in a dark room. Since then I’ve been featured in numerous print magazines, calendars, and online publications.
